Kali  Weapons Highlights

The hallmark of these classes is the sophisticated analyzation of technique and structure followed by flow drills. These fun classes are intellectually and physically stimulating to the martial artist at any level.

Personal exploration and discovery, coordination, balance, self defense, health and fitness are just a few benefits of this beautiful and functional art. Appropriate especially for adults who would like a low impact strategic and defensive martial art or physical activity. The balanced approach is an underlying reason for the health benefits of the art.

Kali is a weapons based martial art from the Philippines, centuries old. The word Kali comes from two ancient Filipino words - Kamot (hand or body) and Lihok (motion). Taken together they mean the study of body motion. Our study of the body involves the combative motions and their applications.

Single Stick Training:

Stick work is a primary feature of modern Kali training. Stick is also a stepping stone to bladed combat, where we use this training to cultivate the attributes of angling, footwork, sensitivity, distancing and offensive/defensive strategy.

Double Stick:

Use of double stick drills give beginning students a coordination base to develop both hands and eutilise body mechanics that will later be used in combative application. Students often report that this is their favourite part of the beginning training.

Stick and Dagger:

The actual weapons used vary but the principles are important. The principles learnt here help develop weapon use, choice and practicality of close and mid range weapons. The flow drills are root techniques, vital to understanding the empty hand portion of the art. These techniques are then followed by the flow training mixing in with disarms, positioning and ‘to zero application. Hallmarks of this category are parrying and deflecting skills that allow the student to "zone away" from rear hand attacks and other opponents.

Single and Double Dagger:

Filipino Martial Artists have been famous for their knife tactics for centuries. Knife training is used to develop the attributes of speed, sensitivity, footwork, fine motor skill and economy of motion. This is an area that has application to modern self defence.

Staff:

One of the most used self defence type weapons with brooms, mops, etc having access within most homes. The staff develops longer range and close range skills and is excellent in developing body rotation and 2 person impact drills.

Flexable Weapon:

Originally rope, but modern day clothing (bandanna, ties, belts, ect) make it an applicable weapon training tool for self defence and kali based mastery.

Firearm:

Not traditionally a trained weapon but likens to projectile weapons such as blow darts, arrow, etc with obvious intrinsic issues involved including mechanical and physical disarms.
